Presentation PA #81

Anime Fans And Obesity; Please Take Care Of Yourself, Everyone! Well, normally I write my presentation page to introduce anime shows, but this time I'd like to express my serious concern about obesity among anime fans. I became an Immigrant to the USA in 1980 and in those days North Americans in general were not that obese. But almost a quarter of a century later, everywhere I go, I am appalled to see so many unhealthy obese people of all ages and genders and anime fans are no exception.

People talk about the high cost of medical and health care, but why do people get sicker than they used to? Because most physical disorders and illnesses they are having today are all caused by or related to obesity. It causes high blood pressure, diabetes, arteriosclerosis (i.e. hardening of the arteries), heart problems, apoplexie and, worse yet, all kind of cancers. I knew an acquaintance who's a doctor and said to me: "If half of my patients ever lose their weight, they won't have to come see me anymore!"

So, everyone, please don't take this obesity problem lightly! I want you to live a healthy life to enjoy & keep watching anime & reading manga! We really all have to do something to overcome this difficult situation. I know it's NOT easy because eateries, such as McDonald, Wendy's, etc., are everywhere, in every street corner you look. These days, North Americans -- and even Japanese -- children are having diabetes and all sort of so-called "adult" disorders much earlier in their life, in an alarming rate, because of all the fatty foods they eat & the fact that they are doing less exercises! We must really change our eating habit for the sake of our health and start exercising! Maybe you should think twice before enjoying your favorite anime shows with a big snack. Please be careful. Maybe you can change your habit such as drinking sugary soda pops & chips with enormous amount of calories & almost NO nutritious value. What about drinking ice tea (with NO sugar added) and eating fruits instead?

Modern & urban lifestyle is quite stressful to human bodies, and this is why we MUST eat nutricious foods (instead of junk foods!) to be healthy and to be able to enjoy longevity. Well, of course, it is easier said than done. But it's is never too late to change your habits! You have a whole bright future ahead of you and MUST take care of yourself physically & psychologically, so let's start changing our lifestyle little by little for the better!

Now that the summer is here we can all enjoy the outdoor a little more. Don't stay glued to your computer or TV or video games and go outside to walk, play and do some sports. You can sit in the shade of a tree and read a manga! Personally, since last March, I started to walk a little more and be more active and I've already lost ten pounds!

It has been a long time since an issue of the magazine was that late. We are quite sorry about that. We worked hard to pack this issue with as much information and articles as possible and we also worked hard to prepare the expended version of our web page, offering more articles and reviews than ever (it is coming soon at www.protoculture-mag.com)! Those things take time. And since we have a very small staff, many little problems (health problems and computer glitches, etc.) can cause production delays. Recently our server has been under constant attack with lots of messages with viruses and it caused problems with our e-mails and the web page (we might have lost some e-mails and it delayed the update of the web page -- whoever is doing this, please STOP). However, whatever the circumstances, be assured that we are always doing our best! Thanks for your patience and understanding.

In this issue, Protoculture Addicts, the longest running anime & manga magazine in North America!, is offering you some anime & manga titles to ponder on for the summer and we are introducing you to twelve (12!) anime titles! As always, we do our best to offer you the most useful information, all condensed in a small, affordable format! First, you will find spotlights on Saikano (aka She The Ultimate Weapon), Gilgamesh, Planetes, and Peace Maker Kurogane. We are also offering you lots of reviews about books (6), manga (25), anime-related products (11 CD sountracks, 3 non-Japanese animations, 2 models), anime (60) and live-action movies (14) and we talk about several festivals (more on the movies seen at last year's Montreal World Film Festival and Fantasia) and conventions (Anime Reactor, Ohayo Con, Ushi Con). Finally, more anime are presented in our "Anime Stories:" Ace wo Nerae, Cromartie High, Full Metal Alchemist, Gunslinger Girl, Ai Yori Aoshi: Enishi, Galaxy Railways, Kaleido Star, and R.O.D. The TV ! Enjoy it and have a nice summer!
